What is an e-book?
An e-book, or electronic book, is the digital and virtual version of the paper book. In essence, the content of the paper book is no longer printed on paper pages, but is stored in a digital "file", appropriately formatted and ready to be uploaded and read through tools that display it. The formatting determines the format of the electronic book and therefore the type of file (PDF, EPUB, Mobipocket, TXT, etc.) and the tools for reading it are either traditional ones, PC, MAC or the more modern and dedicated E-Book Reader or even SmartPhones or iPads.
E-book readers are devices dedicated to reading electronic books and have the distinctive feature of being equipped with an e-ink technology screen, which does not emit light and therefore allows for more comfortable reading that does not tire the reader's eyesight.

What are e-book formats?
The e-books in the catalogue are in EPUB, PDF or Mobipocket format
- EPUB: is a dynamic pagination format, which determines the number of pages depending on the size of the text chosen for reading, or even the resolution of the screen used for reading. It is, in fact, the standard chosen for the distribution of e-books.
- PDF: Fixed-pagination format, already used for many years, mainly used for books that require a fixed page size.
- Mobipocket: is a format (.mobi) supported by some compatible e-reader devices or applications (e.g. Kindle)
To prevent the illegal distribution of e-books, there are several protections:
- Social DRM: It involves “marking” the pages of the book with specific images and the buyer's data (e.g. name and surname), which will act as “ex libris”. In this way there will be no protection techniques that could provide technical reading problems and the illegal distribution of the book will be marked with the data of the legitimate owner.
- DRM: This is a technical control of the ability to read the purchased file on a limited number of reading devices, limiting its illegal distribution. This system does not allow printing of the purchased file except for some exceptions. This type of protection requires special application software to be read.
How can I download and read the purchased e-book on my PC or MAC?
If you have a PC and want to read e-books in EPUB format, make sure you have the Adobe Digital Editions software. You can download it for free at: http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/digital-editions/download.html
For e-books in PDF format, Adobe Reader software is sufficient.
If the formats to be read are protected with Adobe DRM, the presence of the Adobe Digital Edition software is always required and registration on the Adobe website to obtain an “Adobe ID” account.
Before purchasing a DRM-protected e-book, you need to prepare your PC by entering the credentials obtained during registration on the Adobe website .

How can I download and read the purchased e-book on my e-book reader?
Normally all e-book readers (e-readers) have in their package a software product for PC/MAC to install. This software product allows the connection of the e-reader to the PC/MAC through a cable on the USB communication port. This connection allows the synchronization of the e-reader with the PC/MAC allowing the transfer of purchased e-books from the PC/MAC to the e-reader reading device.
If your e-reader does not allow reading of files protected by Adobe DRM, you will not be able to read these types of files, while you will be able to read files protected by watermarks (Social DRM) without any problems.
